Drumlinmedia.com recorded Cavan Ice Breakers brave the windy conditions for their 44th Annual Christmas Swim on Annagh Lake Butlersbridge.Co Cavan Ireland. This year the Air Temperature was +6C and the Water Temperature was reported to be +10C. Their was a magnificent turn out despite the inclement conditions. Sean Walsh who has attended all 44 events stated he was delighted with the turnout and was looking forward to the record breaking 45th Annual Swim in 2012. Took a trip up to Sliabh Glabh this morning to sort out an issue with the local Broadband. Basically its a major communications hub for Cavan and its surrounding towns and villages, and we in Butlersbridge rely on it for our Broadband. I would not know all the various providers on Sliabh G from broadband to mobile phone, emergency services, radio and even tv. There are plenty of dishes of various sizes and strenghts. Anyway I just thought it would be good to put up something showing where it is. If you go shopping in Lidl and while in the carpark look in the direction of Ballyjamesduff, on the left you will see this high point. Video below.

I was referred to your excellent web page by my old school teacher Philip Dunne. I am currently researching my family tree and have discovered that I may be a descendant of William Hague (architect). I believe his son Joseph married my great grandmother and they had one child, Mary Ellen Hague. Joseph was drowned at sea sometime in the early 20th century. As for the online streaming of the King and Queen event in the Derragarra Inn while we knew the quality of the online video streaming would only be upto webcam standard we decided to go ahead and stream it anyway.

This was a good testing ground and we should be well able to improve things for future events. Audio was a major concern as highlighted by viewers and understandably. Again this can be overcome on the next event. So do check back.

Great weather, Great Fun, I ran in a race, that's all I am saying bout that, and a surprise helicopter landing. Anyway I took too many pictures and videos and would not be able to put them all up so instead in no real particular order I dumped them all in to a compilation video with some catchy sound tracks from YouTube. Enjoy.

The event of the helicopter landing has been altered/exaggerated for the hell of it, gotta through in a bit of humour somewhere. So thats not Mike in the Tuxedo, just Micks head on another body. Sorry Mick.
It was actually a wedding group gate crashing our party and needed somewhere to land to attend a wedding in our local St. Aiden Church. Congrats to you both, ye had a great day for it and hope ye enjoyed the visit to Butlersbridge.

Castle Sanderson or Saunderson

Castle Sanderson or Saunderson as sometimes spelt, is only a short distance down the road from us in Butlersbridge. Its now in the care of Cavan County Council and Scouting Ireland http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castle_Saunderson

I meet up with a few colleague's from CCC who were visiting the site, and I asked could I tag along and video it. Castle Sanderson often popped up in conversion over the years and as a kid I'd here stories of it. Such a large estate and so close to Butlersbridge but yet I'd never seen it. I had to find out more so I took some time off work and tagged along.

An extract found while googling Castle Sanderson -
The Castle Sanderson estate lay partly in Cavan and partly in Fermanagh. There were three avenues leading to the Castle with imposing high white iron gates and spiked railings each side: the Belturbet gates so called because they lead off the road to Belturbet, a nice little town on the river Erne; the Sweep gates, I suppose because the road there swept round a double bend; and lastly the Fermanagh gates, which were the ones used mostly by the gentry in their fine carriages. Here there was a pretty little gate lodge and a bridge, and the avenue led past the little estate church with its surrounding grave yard in which lay the bodies of the Sanderson family for over 200 years, in a crypt with an iron gate and a strong metal door.

A few minutes' walk from the castle was a beautiful wild garden. It had been started by one of the Sanderson ladies many years before, and each lady in turn had added her own touches to it. The result was lovely - many beautiful trees had been brought back from all over the world, azaleas scented the air and lily of the valley added their fragrance. Streams with wooden bridges over them ran into a little lake with an island, where wild fowl nested in peace from predators. Such a peaceful place, even the bees, drunk on nectar, moved slowly from flower to flower.

Colonel Sanderson was a bustling, bad tempered little man and most of his staff feared him. His wife was an invalid in a wheelchair - she was a kind, gentle lady, and was the only one who didn't fear the Colonel. He could never outwit her in any argument - she just laughed at him.
The little road ran gently down. It was narrow and stony, and the carriage tracks were filled occasionally with rough stones from the quarry. On one side was the long stone wall behind which was the Castle Sanderson estate, on the other side were fields belonging to small farms. A fine farmhouse stood back from the road, belonging to the Scarlett family and now owned by William Scarlett, who lived with his widowed mother Ellen.

Jessie Woodger (née McMahon) was born in 1923 close to where Co. Cavan meets Fermanagh - an area which is now border country between the Republic and Northern Ireland.
She settled in England after the Second World War, and lived in Headley, Hampshire.
Jessie died in April 2010.

Companion Tips
    * Zinnias keep most pests away from cucumbers, melons and marrows.
    * Rosemary will protect beans against weevils
    * Rosemary, sage, thyme and mint will help keep cabbage moths away.
    * Basil will keep flies away from potatoes; chives deter aphids, mint deters ants; garlic protects potatoes against blight
    * Rhubarb protects beans against blackfly
    * Leeks protect carrots from the carrot fly
    * Celery keeps moths away from cabbage and onions protect beetroot.
    * Beans--They like celery and cucumbers but dislike onions and fennel.
    * Cabbage--Celery, dill, onions and potatoes are good companion plants They dislike strawberries, tomatoes, and pole beans.
    * Carrots--Leaf lettuce, radish, onions and tomatoes are their friends, Plant dill at the opposite end of the garden.
    * Cucumbers--They like corn, peas, radishes, beans and sunflowers. Cucumbers dislike aromatic herbs and potatoes so keep them away.
    * Lettuce--It grows especially well with onions. Strawberries carrots, radishes and cucumbers also are friends and good companion plants.
    * Onions--Plant them near lettuce, beets, strawberries and tomatoes but keep them away from peas and beans.
    * Peas--Carrots, cucumbers, corn, turnips and radishes plus beans, potatoes and aromatic herbs are their friends. Keep the peas away from onions, garlic, leek, and shallots.
    * Tomatoes--Carrots, onions and parsley are good companion plants. Keep the cabbage and cauliflower away from them.
    * Likewise, there are certain combinations of plants that will inhibit the growth of one or both types of plants. Here are a few combinations to avoid:
    * Potatoes – inhibit growth of tomatoes and butternut squash
    * Beans – inhibit growth of onions
    * Broccoli – inhibits growth of tomatoes
    * Carrots inhibit growth of dill

Any word on the Vodafone Mast

No good news to report there yet. I borrowed a vodafone 3g modem and tested it on a laptop in 2 locations in Butlersbridge last week. While inside each house, I only got a 2g signal. Which is useless basically. However outside the house while in view of the mast I did get a 3g signal and it did work all be it a bit of a weak signal. (This weak signal might not even be from the Corracreeney Mast). So to summarise its not working for broadband yet probably 3g is not switched on at all. I have emailed someone in the hope to find out more information, but as of yet nothing. Once I find out I'll post an update.

Ordinary vodafone 087 mobile phone coverage however seems to have improved though.

Update: Just been informed today 13th May that the 3g element of the new mast has not been switched on yet. Awaiting an answer on when its likely to be switched on.

Hi Padraic thanks for your reply, found your excellent site this evening. I`ve been browsing the web passing the time. Taking my mind of the heavy snow falling outside. Very severe weather here in Coventry, reminds me of the hard winters
In Ross in Co Meath in the 1940s/1950s. Fond memories of Eugine Leddy`s Ceili Band and Ken Brown r.i.p. playing in the Eldorado ballroom in Oldcastle.

All my ceili band lps have been digitally remastered by myself. The lp of Eugine was recorded in Co Cavan lp done in New York, 5 tracks of E Leddy on one side, Ballinamere on the other side, I will take a photo of the record; cover tomorrow and email to you. The recording was done in cavan in the 1950s.The lp was done in new york for the Irish market there, it was never available in Ireland.
I`m sure a lot of the late Eugine relations have never heard this recording

A lot of water under and over the bridge since you last heard from me good job the sewer pipe is up high this time around.
The last few months can be remembered for many things, from floods, to bishops, to budgets, cross border shopping and Tiger Woods. One woman I know is Babs Rudden Drumcor Redhills.

Babs was featured recently in an article in the Anglo Celt and if you visit a bookshop you will see her photograph on the cover page of a book written by an englishman about the forgotten characters around Ireland. Babs is still carrying on (farming) at eighty years young . She says the gate in the cattle shed is hard to close for a woman of my age. She is not a candidate for big brother or the x factor but is quite contented in her own little environment. I called to the house on a hot summers day some years ago where she was outside feeding the banty hens with a pair of mens wellington boots “chuck” “chuck””chuck” as she fed the hens. Tiger woods mistresses would be out of place here. I know you she says as she approached the car “ your mother was flood from killybandrick and I was at killoughter school with her “no need for “google” around here I thought. Babs was left to carry on with the farm when her brother known locally as “scud” passed away. If you ever heard a song sung by pat short “wlid willie wallace” this was scud. She discussed with me in Kellys pub his favouite food “six duckeggs cracked on the pan. (Nevin Maguire eat your heart out). He was a regular visitor to the bridge with his tractor and trailer and the sow. Three whiskeys in the one glass was his order--down the hatch--jump on the tractor and down for Cloverhill cheering.

People like this live in their own little way and they think “nama” is a pet lamb. For us and the the youth it could be a lion.

I must mention the passing of a former neighbour of mine Pat Smith or as he was Pat the horse to distinguish him from other Pat Smiths. (John Clancy would have known Pat). Pat travelled to every horse fair in the midlands and often walked horses back to Cavan. Ropes tied to tails, two abreast and put into a field overnigh to journey on the next day. Pats father tells of his overnight stay in an atein house in “artlone“. John was asleep in this room when he heard a noise at his pillow where he was hiding his money. He garbbed the ash plant, belted the intruder who awoke everybody in the house and Johns finishing line was “ the women came running in to the room in their buff (johns word for naked). At this time each year every farm had turkeys for sale. Pats task was to sell the turkeys and my job was to stop the fowl lorry. When the buyer jumped out the haggling started. Youll not make a cod outa me. No sale, only disapointment for the man who stopped the lorry as there was no half -crown for xmas. Nevertheless your Christmas box was always there at Smiths.

Speaking of christhas boxes it was the custom that time to recieve some Christmas box from your local grocery store. It was a welcome gift in many households. There was always a christmas cake by geateau. Jelly. Pot of jam and the sponge for the triffle.

Now its bonus points on your card at Dunnes, Tesco, Super value etc.

Biddy Young sent the husband with the memorandum to do some shopping. Jokingly the shop assistant put six bottles of guinness in the bottom of the bag. Shortly after arriving home Phil was summoned to account for his movements. His eyes watered when he saw the bottles but when Biddy discovered she was charged Phil was dispatched with haste backto the shop for a refund.Phils reply “phoo -hoo the buggering man”

On the home front I must commend the Christmas tree committee for their good work with the christmas lighting and all those who worked in bad weather to complete the project. Between the success of the football teams and ventures like this it lifts some of the doome and gloom that is around .

This year will be though on many people who have lost their jobs and those who are struggling to pay morgages. Most of these people are victems of that ruthless “celtic tiger” I don’t think the government has done enough in the recent budget to assist them. As for those who did not seek work when it was freely available the jury is stillout.

NOT ALOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THIS: Not long ago and far away, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip...but there were problems everywhere.

Four of his elves were sick, and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the regular ones so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule.

Then Mrs. Claus told Santa that her mom was coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more. When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two had jumped the fence and were out, heaven knows where. More Stress. Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the boards cracked and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the toys. So, frustrated, Santa went into the house for a cup of coffee and a shot of whiskey. When he went to the cupboard, he found the elves had hidden the liquor and there was nothing to drink. In his frustration, he dropped the coffee pot and it broke into hundreds of little pieces all over the he kitchen floor.

He went to get the broom and found that mice had eaten the straw it was made from.

Just then the doorbell rang and Santa cussed on his way to the door. He opened the door and there was a little angel with a great big Christmas tree. The angel said: "Where would you like to put this tree Santa?"

And that my friends, is how the little angel came to be on top of the Christmas tree.

A few showers today but overall it didn't rain too much, not sure if the flood went down much if any. Believe there is more on the way over the coming days. Went for a stroll up the Mulligans/Mundy's Hill today and took a few snaps. Got caught in one almightly downpour, more like sidepour, it was coming at me at 180degrees. My umbrella took a hell of a beating. Also am sorry to see there has been some flooding in Mary Tierney's House across from Boylans, and pumping equipment is working round the clock.

We have transmitters up on Killavanny reservoir (Tweedy’s hill) and at Annagh Lake.
We have line of sight into clones road area and most of the outskirts of Butlersbridge and as we get into these areas we can hop around to cover more of the village itself.

It seems that there always has been a heavy concentration of talent in our community. This talent was most evident in the performance arts such as singing, dancing, acting and playing music. In the 40’s and 50’s the old temperance hall, St. Aidan’s Hall, was shaking to the dancing and music provided by local bands such as Eugene Leddy's ceili band.
